Biography

My Expertise

I provide support and oversight over the various business systems that we use at The Arc Oregon, including our accounting software, databases, and other web-based systems.

I have a deep historical understanding of individual support planning (ISP) processes in Oregon since 2003. I joined OTAC as an ISP trainer in 2006 and have been with The Arc Oregon since our organizations merged in 2018. I led our organization’s work supporting the Oregon ISP process from 2013 to 2018.

I’ve provided support to the Portland Gathering for Person Centered Practices each summer since 2005. This annual event, produced by The Learning Community for Person Centered Practices, has served as one of the highlights of my professional life every year.

My Why

I love to hear people’s stories and learn from others’ experiences. I also love to teach others.

How I found the I/DD community…

Growing up, I had several good friends in my life who used American Sign Language as their primary language. My friends often asked me to serve as their interpreter throughout high school and early college years. I really enjoyed working in the role of an interpreter, but knew I needed more training. I was accepted to Western Oregon University’s Bachelor of Science in Interpreting ASL/English program. After completing the 600-hour internship at the conclusion of the program, I realized that the life of a professional interpreter wasn’t a good fit for me.

A friend at university started a job providing community-based supports to people who had recently left Oregon’s I/DD institution, which was in the process of closing. She loved her job and encouraged me to apply. I needed work to support my college tuition so I applied at Partnerships in Community Living (PCL). I loved the work and made incredible connections that I cherish to this day. Among other roles I held at PCL, I was able to use my bilingual skills to supervise a team of Deaf and hearing direct support professionals as we all worked together to support the active lives of three amazing women.

My Life

I love living in a rural setting. I’m conveniently located between Portland and Salem, but I’m about 15 minutes away from the highway. My nearest neighbors are about half a mile away. I’m grateful to look out my window each day and see fields and orchards and sometimes goats and sheep.

I’m a cancer survivor and I live every day with chronic medical conditions that I manage with support from my doctor and my close family.

I’ve been a pianist since a very young age and I’m active in the musical theatre community around the Portland/Metro area, having served as music director for more than 100 local productions over the last 25 years.
