Meeting With Legislators

Helpful Hints

When meeting and advocating with elected officials there are a few general guidelines that might be helpful in making a good impression.

  • Be courteous, passionate, and authentic – they are just people too
  • Identify yourself as one of their constituents and tell them who you represent
  • Know the issues you want to talk about by doing your homework ahead of time
  • Offer facts and statistics whenever possible
  • If you don’t know the answer to a question, let them know you will do some research and get back to them
  • Tell your story – real life stories are powerful, but be brief and connect your story to the issues you are presenting
  • Bring a picture to illustrate your story and/or the person you are representing

Before the Meeting Ends

Legislators are short on time so make sure to stay on topic to maximize your time with them. Before your leave, be sure to:

  • Leave fact sheets or other written materials about your issue
  • Ask for their legislative support
  • Ask what you can do to help them understand or move the issue forward
  • Thank them for their time!
