About this training

This session explores why dignity of risk matters when supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). We’ll talk about how balancing safety with autonomy helps people live fuller, more meaningful lives. You’ll learn the difference between what’s “important TO” someone and what’s “important FOR” them — and how to use that understanding to support choice and independence.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Explain what dignity of risk means and why it’s essential for quality support.
  • Understand the difference between “important TO” and “important FOR” and apply it in real situations.
  • Identify ways to support decision-making while managing risk responsibly.
  • Recognize common barriers to dignity of risk and strategies to overcome them.
  • Reflect on your role in promoting autonomy and respect in everyday interactions.
